Join us by Zoom for our 2025 Lenten Program.
Lent Devotions and Discussion Group for the St. John’s, Richmond
and the Parish of South Carleton
This year’s theme of our parish Lenten program is: Lift Up Your Voice: Singing through Lent and Easter. “All of creation,” wrote the twelfth-century German abbess and composer, St. Hildegard of Bingen, “is a song of praise to God,” a swirling symphony all around us. And St. Augustine, the fourth-century North African bishop, is said to have once remarked “To sing is to pray twice,”– that is, first praying through the song’s words, and second through its music.

This Lenten season, we will take the Christian musical treasury as our guide, this sacred art, thousands of years old, in which big ideas and beautiful melodies come together. In this devotional, each week, biblical texts and beloved songs inspire practices that lift our hearts during our Lenten journey. As the days lengthen, the birds will sing – as we listen to beautiful hymns, strengthening our spirits, praying twice, and joining in with creation’s symphony of sorrow and joy, anguish and comfort, death and new life.
Join us to reflect, pray, and discuss how Mary’s song prepares us to celebrate Easter with joy. A ZOOM link will be sent to those who wish to participate. Here are the dates and times (all sessions are held on Wednesdays via ZOOM except the first session will be held on a Tuesday). Join in as many or few sessions as able.
